Political Insider - Issue XXXV September 10th, 2003

By featured writer Marty Schwartz

Background: Age 43; Married with three children and one small dog. Mayor of Massapequa Park. Private corporate partner in a graphic communications business. Degree from Pace University. Originally from Deer Park.

Cell Towers: These will be the technological dinosaurs of the 20th century. They have a place in our landscape away from residential households. The proprietary ownership by individual carriers is a redundancy of service and a waste of resources, both natural and aesthetic. All levels of government should make a concerted effort to minimize the amount of towers necessary to achieve their goals.

Message to County Exec Suozzi: I'd like to see more cooperation in County government and less blame on both sides. In addition, Massapequa Park Village looks forward to working with all of Nassau County and its leaders.

State Aid to Villages: It has been consistent. We count on the State for our major road and capital construction projects. State Senator Fuschillo and Assemblyman Labriola have been extremely helpful in obtaining funds, and improving the infrastructure of our village.

Hobbies, Favorite Movies, Mystery writer & sports team: Fishing and golf; Saving Private Ryan, mystery writer James Patterson and the Yankees.

Successes As A Mayor: We have established a cohesive and responsive government. Our main focus is the quality of life for our residents.  We have an on-going beautification plan, which includes such projects as Village Square and Klasen's Plaza. We have also implemented a road construction program.  Our greatest strength is our ability to adhere to a strict fiscal self-discipline while still moving our Village forward.

Lighter Law (enacted legislation): We go to great lengths to prohibit cigarette sales to minors. I felt that it was a natural progression to ban lighters and all incendiary devices to minors. This is just another step we can take to protect our children.

The Economy (US & Local): As a Mayor in any municipality, you have to balance the needs of your Village while working within the confines of our budget restraints.  Americans needs quality job creation.  America's strength has always been its manufacturing might. We have shifted to a service economy.  For a strong economy you must balance between the two sectors.  I would like to see Wall Street put more emphasis on revenue and job creation and less on the bottom line.

Re-Assessment (Nassau): This issue should transcend politics.  Reassessment affects all of us.  I feel the court's time restraints placed on the County were unrealistic given the magnitude of the task and the impact to our residents.

Personal (Family) Goals (this Year): To help my children become the best citizens that they can be and get away for a few days vacation with my wife and family.
