Political Insider - Issue XIV March 8th

By featured writer Marty Schwartz

For this column I have interviewed Hempstead Village Trustee Bill Hughes, who is running for Trustee on the Unity and Independence lines.

BACKGROUND Age 56; married with one child. Resident of Hempstead Village for 41 years. Job Placement and Development Coordinator for Nassau County. Graduate of Hempstead High School and attended Chamberlain College (Boston).

TO GOVERNOR PATAKI We need to have you assist us in helping Hempstead Village become a city. The State has to approve the process. We need Assembly approval. Help us bring more economic development funds to the Village for roads and infrastructure.

CRIME Although there is a decline in smaller crimes, there is still a need to address this problem. We need more police and youth programs that will act as positive reinforcements and role models.

FACTS ABOUT HEMPSTEAD VILLAGE The budget is $54.5 million, there are 70,000 residents, 550 employees and I am running for a one-year unexpired term. Next year, if successful, I will run for a full four-year term.

HOUSING There is not enough housing stock to fit the population. There needs to be single-family homes and rentable units for our residents.

APPEAL TO DEMOCRATIC VOTERS You need to vote where you will get results. If you know me, I work for everyone and deliver results to the Village. The Unity Party, which I am representing, has always been responsive to the needs of the residents.

AFFILIATIONS/INTERESTS President, Hempstead Heights Civic Association, President, Coordinating Council of Civics (Hempstead), President, Harbor Child Care (Nassau). I also coach lacrosse and midget football.

MESSAGE TO COUNTY EXECUTIVE SUOZZI Allow the villages to participate in the profit sharing. Increase the share of the sales tax revenue that the villages receive. You must also increase our share of the forfeiture funds.

CLOSING COMMENT The people I've worked with on the campaign have been warm towards me, my family, and my goals and ideals. I'd like to thank them for that. If elected, I will enhance the efforts of the Garner Administration to deliver continued results that you will see.
