Debt-Ceiling Debate “Impacts” More than 3 Million New Yorkers

NEW YORK – A lack of progress in the current debt-ceiling debate could halt Social Security checks in just two weeks, President Obama says – and that could have a major impact for millions of New Yorkers. About one in three seniors aged 65 and older are already just barely treading water, says Chris Widelow, associate state director of AARP New York. If the nation’s lawmakers fail to reach agreement soon, he says, millions of frail and older New Yorkers won’t get their Social Security checks. “A staggering 3.2 million New Yorkers rely on Social Security as part of their income. ”
