Rep. McCarthy: It’s that time of year again … Hurricane Season

Wed, Aug 24, 2011

Nassau, News, Opinions

Dear LIPolitics.com site-visitor,

It’s hurricane season again, and the National Weather Service is encouraging residents along the East Coast, including on Long Island, to prepare for a possible hurricane this weekend.

This week’s tremor along the East Coast, as well as the upcoming Hurricane Irene, remind us that we should always be prepared when these kinds of disasters strike.

The Nassau County Office of Emergency Management, LIPA, and National Grid all follow the path of storms and develop emergency response plans to address issues that result from hurricanes and other natural disasters.  I encourage residents to take this opportunity to ensure that they are prepared for the possibility of a hurricane or major storm in the near future.

One way to prepare for this type of event is to assemble a family disaster “go kit” containing everything that you would need if you have to suddenly leave your home.  In addition, check in advance about proper evacuation routes and the locations of emergency shelters.  Finally, if you have pets, be sure to come up with a plan as to where you will bring your pet and where local pet shelters are located.

There are a number of resources that suggest even more steps and instruct residents on how to prepare for a major storm.  I urge you to review and to take advantage of these resources.
