Statement from Supervisor Mark Lesko on the Town of Brookhaven State of Emergency

Mark Lesko

Farmingville, NY – “Today at 1:00 p.m. I extended the Town of Brookhaven’s State of Emergency for 24 hours in order for the Town to adequately respond to Hurricane Irene. Hurricane Irene has left its mark on the Town of Brookhaven and in some areas there is serious damage. 52,442 LIPA customers in the Town of Brookhaven are still without power and the Town Highway Department is responding to requests for over 1,200 trees down, 374 of which are LIPA related. The Town has 80 traffic signals that are still out and we are waiting for LIPA to re-power them. In addition, the Town is responding to storm destruction to our shoreline areas and marinas. The Town’s beaches remain closed until at least tomorrow and are being assessed by the Suffolk County Health Department. In order for the Town to continue to recover from the storm, Brookhaven’s State of Emergency will remain in effect until August 31, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.”
