Political Insider - Issue X January Feb 2nd

By featured writer Marty Schwartz

For this column, I have profiled 19th Assembly District Republican/Conservative candidate, Dave McDonough. This race covers the Bellmore-Merrick area in Nassau, in addition to Island Park and parts of Freeport, Baldwin and Levittown.

BACKGROUND Age 64; married with three children. Born in Albany, New York and a resident of Merrick for 35 years. Degree in Economics from Columbia University. Owner of a credit & collection agency in Merrick.

AFFILIATIONS President, Nassau County Council, Chamber of Commerce, Past President, Merrick Chamber of Commerce, Member, Town of Hempstead Facade Improvement Planning Committee, Revitalization Chairman, Downtown Merrick Improvement Project and Member, Sacred Heart Parish.

WHY I AM RUNNING FOR THE ASSEMBLY When the opportunity came up, I decided to go for it. I can now do more for people on a larger scale. I do not believe in retirement and this is what I enjoy doing.

MESSAGE TO GOVERNOR PATAKI Keep doing what you are doing! Continue more economic development in the communities and offer those additional incentives for jobs creation. We need your help in attracting businesses to Nassau County.

GOALS (FIRST 100 DAYS) IF ELECTED Immediately I have to seek more input from constituents on their needs. Senior citizens issues must be addressed and we need to keep the taxpayers programs ongoing. I'm also in favor of a State takeover plan of the Roosevelt schools.

TO COUNTY EXECUTIVE SUOZZI I will have an open mind when dealing with you on Nassau's finances. You have a tough road ahead of you and I wish you well.

HOBBIES Golf, reading historical novels and home repair (when needed).

TOP PROBLEMS IN THE 19th AD (that must be addressed) There are 5 that come to mind: (1)to ensure quality of life. I do not want the Southern State increased in size based on the LITP 2000 Plan. (2)mass transit availability. (3)rewarding schools and teachers for a job well done. (4)The Bellmore Army Base-how it should be developed. We must utilize the space by ensuring affordable housing and some senior living facility. (5)the traffic flow on Hempstead Turnpike. Hempstead Turnpike and Gardiners Lane (Levittown) has a turning lane problem. I will work with the State DOT to improve traffic safety and continue the highway beautification program on Hempstead Turnpike.
