For this column I have interviewed Hempstead
Democratic Town Councilwoman, Dorothy (Dot) Goosby, who is a
candidate for Hempstead Supervisor.
SUCCESSES AS A COUNCILWOMAN Opening up
government to the people. I created initiatives to have Town meetings in
various locales in the Town so that the people can meet their officials,
including commissioners, and especially in Roosevelt. I helped to start
night meetings, stopped the Town from not giving benefits to
part-timers, helped form a "cell tower" committee task force
that evaluates applications and revised the budget analysis process.
BACKGROUND Age 65 and married with two
children. Elected to the Town Board in November 1999. Masters Degree in
Business Administration/Labor Relations from Adelphi University with an
undergraduate degree from Florida A&M. A New York State Certified
and Registered Dietitian with more than 25 years of administrative and
financial experience.
ON KATE MURRAY You're a nice professional
person and I'd like to maintain that during the race and stick to the
issues. At the end of the race, we should both be professionals and work
for the betterment of Hempstead, providing the best services to the
residents.
TAXES In Hempstead, we have the best tax
base. Taxes have not been raised in 7 years. We have a great credit
rating. The County appears to be on its way back. We shall see.
POLITICAL YEAR 2003 The legislature will
be a rough battle. The key issues will be taxes and the smoking ban.
People are more intelligent than we think they are. People will vote for
candidates that will best represent their needs. There will be no strict
party votes this year.
HEROES Former Texas Congresswoman,
Barbara Jordan, former President Bill Clinton and my mom and dad.
ON BARBARA PATTON (a possible opponent)
Thank you very much for your years of service. Times have changed. I
think that it's the wrong time for you to run. I feel I am the best
candidate for this position.
MY WORK WITH STEVE LEVY (election
changes) We are working together to sponsor a bill to be presented to
the New York State Assembly, to change the State laws that allow the
Town Boards to appoint an individual to complete the term of an elected
official. Special elections should occur before 100 days at the end of a
term. This is for Towns greater than 50,000 people. We have over 750,000
people in Hempstead
TO NASSAU DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP You're
missing an opportunity to serve the people. I work for all the people
and you may not be helping me provide the service. I would welcome the
support for my candidacy of the Democratic Party and others.
POLITICAL MINORITIES IN HEMPSTEAD They
are more involved than ever before and they know someone looks out for
them. Minority's account for more votes than ever before and between
15-20% of the Town vote in Hempstead.
AFFILIATIONS Serves on the Board of
Directors of Hempstead High school Scholarship Fund and is an adult
member of the Girl Scouts. Member of the Union Baptist Church and former
President of the Hempstead Democratic Club. Former Vice President of the
Hempstead High School Board.
CLOSING COMMENT I'd love to take a short
vacation and visit my dad in Western Florida. But I'm here to run for
office and that comes first/ I intend, and have the ways and means to do
it, to run my race for Supervisor and help the people of Hempstead Town. |
