Interview with North Hempstead Town Councilman Angelo Ferrara

BACKGROUND

Age 59; married with five children and three grandchildren. Resident of New Hyde Park for 33 years and

originally from Flushing. President of a printing company; part owner of an auto body shop and former Town Councilman 1997-2001. Associates Degree from RCA Institute of Technology.

PROPERTY TAXES

Everyone is getting killed. The school taxes tied to the property values are the key problem. It adds to the taxpayer’s problems and will force our senior citizens to move.

SUCCESSES AS A COUNCILMAN (1997-2001)

There are several: 1) King Kullen (Manhasset)-I was the deciding vote in allowing this supermarket and changed the zoning to allow it. 2) Longview Drive (Port Washington)-we opened this up to traffic 3) I helped, along  with former Councilman Jim O’Connor, to offer a resolution to vote in Councilmanic Districts, based on a proposition by former Supervisor Newberger.

2004 PRESIDENCY

Unless something happens with the mid-east or the economy, Bush should win. The Democrats do not have the real issues they need to have to take this election.

ENVIRONMENT

We need to address the brown fields issue especially in Western Nassau County and Lake Success.

NORTH HEMPSTEAD ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

There is illegal housing in the New Castle community with multi families living under terrible conditions. We must address this issue now and fix it.

STATE SENATOR BALBONI

Michael is concerned with everyone and works diligently to support the district. Something good will happen to him in the near future.

PROBLEMS IN NORTH HEMPSTEAD (I will work on over the next 2 years)

I still represent the entire Town not just the 35,000 residents of New Hyde Park, Garden City Park and Mineola/Williston Park. 1)I’m still concerned by the amount of money that NH spends on debt service. 2)The Southern Tier needs to get its fair share of services from the Town. 3)We need to acquire property in the Southern Tier for parklands.

WORKING WITH THE MAJORITY (as the only Republican Councilman)

It will be okay. They are a new group of Democrats that really haven’t worked together even though they come from diverse backgrounds.

THE SUOZZI ADMINISTRATION

Tom Suozzi has a tough job. He needs to reassess how he is doing his job. He may not be as seasoned as he needs to be.

FAVORITE MOVIE, SPORTS FIGURE, BOOK & DESSERT

Gone With the Wind, Joe DiMaggio, Angels and Demons (Dan Brown) and blueberry pie a la mode

REBUILDING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IN NORTH HEMPSTEAD

I must lead by example and must be accessible. I must let people know that I am around to solve their problems and I certainly will help all people in the 3rd Council District and outside of the District.

MAY NEWBERGER

I enjoyed working with her for many years but it was time for a change. Jon Kaiman brings with him a new perspective on how to move North Hempstead forward. I know I will enjoy working with him.

PERSONAL GOALS

To see my daughter graduate college and try to get away on vacation for a couple of days. I would like to see that all of my children are settled and that the credibility of all elected officials once again brings confidence to the people of Nassau.
