For this column I have
interviewed 7th District Republican Legislative candidate in
Nassau, Mara Jacobowitz.
BACKGROUND
Age 46; married with three children. Resident of North Woodmere for 15
years and Nassau County for twenty years.
College Degree form
Hunter College in Psychology and Sociology. Paid member of several
subsidiary boards of Fortune 500 companies. Active in PTA
Hewlett/Woodmere.
WHY I AM RUNNING
I am committed to my community and there hasn’t been change under the
current legislator, Jeff Toback. My taxes are increasing and have just
increased again and spending has increased and the County parks have
lost their luster.
MESSAGE TO THE
SUOZZI ADMINISTRATION I’m disappointed with the partisan
politics that the Dems have promoted for 4 years and escalated under
your administration. You had no right to yell at a constituent at an
economic development summit in the Oceanside area who complained about a
BZA problem.
TO THE RESIDENTS OF
THE 7TH DISTRICT (NASSAU) The foundation of good
government is understanding what our revenues and expenses are.
Regarding expenses, we need the most bang for the buck. I will make
sure, that while checking each line of the budget, residents of this
district will get the best value for their taxes. We can’t afford
to keep raising taxes and raising County fees.
INCORPORATING
OCEANSIDE & HEWLETT/WOODMERE I was taken aback when we had
problems in the Hewlett/Woodmere area and my opponent suggested
incorporating Hewlett/Woodmere, just like he was trying to do in
Oceanside. The people of Oceanside, based on my walk throughs, do not
want incorporation. We did not elect the incumbent to incorporate but to
fix the County mess. He has been nothing more than a “yes man” to the
current administration.
FAVORITE MOVIE,
BOOK, SPORTS TEAM, POLITICAL HERO Wuthering Heights, The Power
Broker (Caro), Yankees & Justice Sandra Day O’Connor
CIVIC MINDED WORK
I got my first traffic light in 1986
on West Broadway in order to make it safer at West Broadway and Harris.
I’m presently trying to obtain the upgrade at Veterans Square at Burger
King (Hewlett). This upgrade should have occurred before the County
approved the curb cuts for Burger King last year.
TAXES What
I’m uncomfortable with, is that taxes went up, and we are still in a
recession here. Everything financially is based on outer year numbers,
which are considered shaky at best. Where are the dollars being spent
and why did we get a 20% tax increase with a 6% increase in County
spending? There is no answer for this. The sales tax also went up
recently and fees have increased all over. After three years of County
recession, one has to wonder if the CE’s plan of attack, with the
backing of the Majority, is correct.
IN SUM I’m
not leaving Nassau County until things get better. I moved out here, got
married at Eisenhower Park and am raising a family. NC has adopted me.
My children have received a good education and I have enjoyed every
moment here. Nassau County will be better with my victory. I care about
the community and am not concerned about making this job a
stepping-stone towards running for Hempstead Supervisor, like my
opponent.
