In his State of the Union address, President Obama called on Congress to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour, and announced he would issue an Executive Order to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 for the individuals working on new federal service contracts.

Long Island immigrants and their allies held a press conference to respond to the “principles” for immigration reform being presented this week by House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and President Obama’s State of the Union address. Groups expressed encouragement that House Republicans appear to be taking steps toward presenting immigration reform legislation and that President Obama issued another call for immigration reform. They also reiterated that any immigration reform legislation should incorporate the immigrant rights’ movement’s principles.

Mr. Obama claimed to The New Yorker magazine that marijuana is no worse than cigarettes or alcohol and he promoted state efforts by Colorado and Washington to legalize marijuana, which remains illegal under federal law.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced the release of The State of the Suffolk County Agriculture Industry report today. This report summarizes the expressed attitudes and challenges identified by 143 agricultural producers who completed an agricultural survey in 2013 as part of the County’s efforts to develop a new Agriculture and Farmland Protection Plan.

There have been reports of animals being born, raised and held in deplorable conditions throughout New York. Prior to this new law, municipalities who wanted to pass more strict regulations were prohibited from passing laws to restrict breeders’ methods. Now, localities will be able to take stronger action immediately to assist and protect animals.
