Political Insider - Issue XXXIII July 28th, 2003

By featured writer Marty Schwartz

For this column I have interviewed Rocco Iannarelli, who is the Democratic candidate for North Hempstead Receiver of Taxes.

BACKGROUND

Age 48; married with one son. Resident of Williston Park and a Town of North Hempstead resident for 20 years.

Currently Clerk of the Nassau County Legislature. Former Williston Park Trustee (1998-2002) and former President/Owner of Skyline Supermarket Services (1991-1997). Active Member of the Williston Park Rotary Club And serve on the Williston Park Parking Committee.

GOALS IF ELECTED (1st 100 days)

There are three things; (1) Establishing a lock-box system for the receipt of incoming checks. A procedure will be developed that is more user-friendly to the taxpayers. (2) Improving the information flow between The Tax Receiver’s Office and the Comptroller’s Department and (3) Obtaining more grant monies, when the opportunities arise.

LEAVING THE LEGISLATURE FOR HIGHER OFFICE

Its not that I want to leave; I would like to run for and achieve higher office by serving people directly. Hopefully this can be a stepping-stone for good things governmentally many years down the road. I will certainly miss my good friend and Majority Leader, Judy Jacobs.

AS CLERK OF THE LEGISLATURE

Our department takes care of the Democrats and Republicans, which affords me the opportunity to be non-partisan. The budget is approximately $500,000 yearly. Our level of service to the people, who need access to information in the County, is first rate. I helped to reduce the amount of paper used by the County, which resulted in a cost savings and a cleaner work environment.

MESSAGE TO NORTH HEMPSTEAD REPUBLICAN VOTERS

Please keep an open mind to anyone who embraces good government. Realize that this office is user-friendly to all taxpayers and I will not be beholden to the political bosses as your Tax Receiver.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH TOM DiNAPOLI & TOM SUOZZI

DiNapoli is one of my closest friends and is a class individual and elected official. I have a close working relationship with Suozzi and I am impressed by his zeal for the job, which I hope I emulate. If elected, I will work closely with both of these elected officials.

RE-ASSESSMENT

A complete necessity. No one can justify the utilization of a taxation system that was put in place in 1936 and had never changed. That being said, I believe it should have been phased-in over a 3-year period to ease the burden on those who were adversely affected.

HOBBIES

Boating, watching news magazine programs, volunteer work at St. Aidan’s Parish and occasional golf.

NASSAU FINANCES (in general)

Although financially we are better off than we were, we still have not solved the problem of structural deficit. People need to be focused primarily on that issue.

RE: NASSAU COUNTY CHAIR, JAY JACOBS

Chairman Jacobs has clearly set the criteria for his success and our success. That criterion is getting more Democrats elected and raising funds to get them there. I’ll give you my answer on November 5, 2003 as to how he is doing.

PERSONAL MOTTO

Victory belongs to those who want it most.
