For this column I have interviewed Nassau County Conservative Chairman, Roger
C. Bogsted.
BACKGROUND
Age 45; married with two daughters. Resident of Levittown for 13 years.
Bachelors Degree from Montclair State University (New Jersey) in Political
Science and Sociology. Commissioner of Consumer Affairs for Nassau County.
TO BOTH MAJOR PARTIES IN NASSAU
The Conservative Party is not a Party of politicians but ideas. We will forge
alliances and support candidates that promote the values and ideals upon
which this party was founded. We will support registered R's and D's, and
when neither of them adheres to our philosophy, we will run our own
candidate. Our endorsement provided the margin of victory recently in the
19th AD race.
CONSERVATIVE PARTY HISTORY
In 1962, as an alternative to the liberal doctrinaire philosophy that
dominated the three existing political parties, the Conservative Party was
born. The Party helped to restore a meaningful choice for all voters
culminating with the election of Senator Jim Buckley in 1970.
MESSAGE TO GOVERNOR PATAKI
Get back to the core values you espoused when you were first elected to the
Assembly. You are drifting too far to the left.
HOBBIES
Breeding and racing thoroughbred horses and Olympic style amateur wrestling.
I also follow the Mets and Jets.
THE BENT ENDORSEMENT
At that time, I felt that Bruce Bent was the best candidate to fix the fiscal
mess in Nassau. As an independent businessman with no political obligations
and not owing anyone, he could have made the difficult decisions to bring our
budget back into balance.
WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CONSERVATIVE
The Conservative Party is committed to individual liberty and limited
government. We believe in the traditional American values based on the
Constitution including individual freedom, responsibility and effort.
Government is to provide basic services.
THE INDEPENDENT, RIGHT-TO-LIFE AND OTHER MINORITY PARTIES
We were the first Right-to-life Party in New York State. There are times when
we have a more pragmatic approach to the pro-life issue. The Independent
Party doesn't have a platform or philosophy. Basically, it is made up of
opportunists that take advantage of people registering in the Party as
Independent, who really think they are registered independent of any
political party.
KEY RACES 2002
The Governor's race. Send a message of support on The Conservative line-Row D.
We will screen Democrats and Republicans for Nassau political office.
GOALS (Political & Personal)
Build the Nassau County organization, electing Conservative candidates,
including candidates from both major parties with similar views. Spend some
time in Saratoga at my summer home.
