TOO FAST, TWO FURIOUS
December 9, 2011
On last night’s overnight shift, two drivers were arrested in separate incidents, one driving in excess of 100 m.p.h. and one driving the wrong way; both were charged with Driving While Intoxicated.
Deputy Sheriff Rasiak arrested Kamil Duda, a 34-year-old male of Farmingville, operating a 2004 Mercedes eastbound at Exit 58 of the Long Island Expressway. Mr. Duda was traveling at 110 m.p.h., striking another vehicle in the center lane. Mr. Duda was arrested at the scene; subsequent breath test revealed a BAC of .17. He faces multiple charges and will be arraigned later today at First District Court in Central Islip.
Deputy Sheriff Pedigo arrested Kristy Biswas, a 33-year-old female of Garfield, New Jersey, operating a 2008 Hyundai eastbound on the westbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway. Ms. Biswas was arrested at the scene and faces multiple charges, including Aggravated D.W.I., due to her extremely high BAC result of .20. She will be arraigned later today at First District Court in Central Islip.
Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco stated, “Thankfully, these drivers were apprehended before their reckless behavior resulted in loss of life”.

Suffolk Sheriff Bolsters Security for 9-11 Anniversary Weekend
Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco has assigned Sheriff’s Office personnel to provide additional security for critical sites in Suffolk County. The Sheriff has committed both personnel and Sheriff’s Office assets to protect potential areas of concern in light of the inherent, heightened risk associated with the tenth anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Sheriff’s deputies will be enhancing patrol coverage at court buildings, the county airport, on east end waterways – a gateway to New York City, as well as on our highways.
Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco stated, “The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office stands ready as part of the network of law enforcement agencies working in concert to ensure our Homeland Security.”
Suffolk Sheriff Continues Ice Distribution Today!
Riverhead, NY – Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco announced that the Sheriff’s Offices in Riverhead and Yaphank will again be distributing ice to county residents on a first come, first serve basis starting at 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31st.
Yesterday the Sheriff’s Office distributed more than 800 lbs of ice on its first day of distribution.
Ice is a critical need to keep food and certain medications from spoiling in the wake of power outages related to hurricane Irene.
There is no charge for the ice and there is a limit of one cooler fill-up per car. Residents must bring their own cooler. Sheriff DeMarco invites residents to come to the following locations to pick up ice:

SUFFOLK SHERIFF PREPARES AND STANDS READY FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco has actively engaged all Sheriff’s Office assets in preparation for Hurricane Irene’s arrival. Sworn personnel, emergency vehicles and inmate work crews all stand ready.
The Sheriff works in coordination with the Suffolk County Emergency Operations Center. Early preparations have included staging of equipment including an amphibious vehicle and personnel carrier, and the use of inmates to fill sandbags (photo attached). Sworn personnel will respond to emergency service requests during the storm, and inmate work crews will be available post incident to assist in clearing County roadways of downed trees.
Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco stated, “We are uniquely positioned to utilize our dedicated, professional staff and make productive use of inmate labor to the benefit of Suffolk County residents.”
YET ANOTHER D.W.I. WRONG WAY DRIVER IN SUFFOLK
On Sunday, July 31st at approximately 2:40 a.m., Sheriff’s Deputies started receiving calls that a dark colored SUV was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on the Long Island Expressway in the area of Exit 68. Deputies were able to locate the wrong way driver, Eric Jones, 20 years old, of Riverhead, near exit 70. Jones was traveling at approximately 50 m.p.h., weaving down the interstate. Deputies were able to force him to stop by boxing in the vehicle in an attempt to avoid a collision with oncoming traffic, and to prevent Jones from driving away.
Jones was arrested and charged with three counts of D.W.I., including Aggravated D.W.I. as a result of a .20% BAC which is more than twice the legal limit. Additionally, Jones was charged with Reckless Driving and other violations of Vehicle and Traffic Law.
Jones was arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Sunday afternoon and held on $5,000 cash bail or $15,000 bond.
Sheriff DeMarco stated, “The quick action of Deputy Sheriffs prevented the possibility of a head-on collision, which could have resulted in serious injuries to westbound motorists.”
D.W.I. Double Header

Deputy Sheriff Rilling arrested Anthony Vellucci, 33 years old, of Commack on Wednesday afternoon for D.W.I. Drugs. This was not Mr. Vellucci’s first arrest; just four days earlier he had been arrested by Deputy Sheriff Fallica for D.W.I.
Drugs.
In both incidents the defendant was operating a vehicle westbound on the Long Island Expressway, Saturday at 3:00 a.m. and Wednesday at 12:45 p.m. Mr. Vellucci was released from court Saturday but faces additional charges today at arraignment in Central Islip, including D.W.I. Drugs, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th, and multiple vehicle and traffic violations.
Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco stated, “I expect Mr. Vellucci will be in our jail tonight. Clearly he has no intent to change his reckless activity without our intervention.”.
FLEEING FELONS CHARGED

Three suspects were arrested and charged yesterday in an incident which began with a Larceny in Riverhead and ended when the suspects crashed in West Sayville. The driver, Cordell Tucker, 24 years old, from Brooklyn, and his two passengers, Rashawn Naquan Smith, 26 years old of Brooklyn, and Essence Smith, 18 years old of Troy, New York, were arrested at the scene of the crash and are currently charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd. Essence Smith is also charged with Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Additional charges will follow pending review with the District Attorney’s Office.
Following a notification from the Riverhead Town Police Department, the suspects’ vehicle, a 2000 Lincoln Town Car, was spotted on the Long Island Expressway. A registration check revealed switched plates not returning to the vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated at Exit 64, Route 112; the subject vehicle fled the scene as officers approached on foot.
The suspect vehicle failed to stop for Sheriff’s Office and Suffolk County Police Department units for approximately eight minutes as they traveled south on Route 112 to westbound Sunrise Highway, exiting at Lincoln Avenue, where they struck a 2011 Subaru operated by Alan and Gail Sacher (61 and 62 years old) of Holbrook. The victims were transported to Southside Hospitalwhere Gail Sacher later succumbed to her injuries.
